Smile by Dan Chadwick
Jack is on his way to a Halloween party hosted by the girl of his dreams. Being a self-confessed loser when it comes to the opposite sex, he doesn’t hold out much hope of winning her over. Still, he has made great effort with his fancy dress costume in hopes of impressing her.
Meanwhile, around town, a young woman is walking barefoot and approaching individuals with one simple question – “Am I Beautiful?”
Dependant on the response, there could be disastrous, and bloody, consequences.

Took me a minute to pluck up the courage to read this because of that creepy-looking cover. Excellent design! But damn am I glad I did! The story was just as freaky and like most of the author's work, I wanted more!

This short horror story gets straight to the point with its creepy story about a guy heading to a party on a Halloween night and he comes across something deadly. The author did a great job with the flow and rhythm of the story, as well as using a bit of gore to liven things up. I have read Chadwick's other work (BLOODLUST) before and comparing this story to that one--SMILE is tame compared to BLOODLUST but I think this would be a great introduction to his style of writing and storytelling. If you liked this story then I recommend reading more of his stuff--it's all a bloody good time. I recommend this to anyone who likes "Tales from the Crypt" and "Creepshow"--it has that quick 'monster' horror element that leaves the reader wanting more.

If you are asked, especially on Halloween, am I beautiful…you know what you should do right …RUN MF! My first Chadwick short. This one packs a punch. I love the short story format. This one is really, really great. Awesome cover!
