No Escape: Winter Wonderland by Nick Burgin
Caylee was sitting by the living-room window, half reading, half looking out at the white blanket of snow. Something caught her eye, just for a second at first, then clearer as it got closer.
“Dad!” She called. “I think there’s someone outside in the snow.”
Michael rushed over to the window and peered out. “Jesus, poor sod must’ve got caught out when the blizzard hit.” He quickly put on his boots, gloves and jacket, and pulled open the front door. By now the snow was piled a foot high against the walls of the house.
“Be careful,” Clara called after her husband as he ventured into the storm. He returned five minutes later with another man and bundled them both inside.
“My god, are you ok? What happened?” Clara asked the stranger.
“Out walking when the damn blizzard hit,” the man said as her dropped his duffle bag on to the floor with a heavy thud, his voice slightly gruff.
“Well, you can stay here until it blows over, we have a spare room and plenty of spare food from dinner,” Michael replied.
“Bless you,” said the man. “You’re too kind. Foolish, but kind.” Michael stared at the man for a moment in confusion. Then the man reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a gun. “Now, let’s have some fun.”
