Evocative and bleak in equal measures
REVIEW - Geek by Todd Love Evocative, atmospheric, brooding and malevolent, Geek is a beautifully embroidered tale which drags the reader into another world of dark, dank, intrigue and desolation. From the very opening, you’re transported into the world of the Scythes and the mysterious Mr Barker. The world Todd Love creates is an unsettling place filled with dark torments and threatening moods, and given its brevity, he still manages to paint a picture which is as rich and evocative as it is stark and miserable. It is, however, fitting, as a home for Geek. A quick tale which will leave a lasting impression, my only complaint is I wanted to dwell in the world for a lot longer. A totally recommended read, made even more appealing by the fact it’s a mere $0.50 from Godless.
If you go into the woods today
As Always Todd knocks it out of the park with this short. A tale about a family in the clutches of darkness. We meet an amazing selection of characters shrouded in an eerie atmosphere that makes the reader uncomfortable. You can tell the Scythes are plagued by something unnatural even in the first couple of paragraphs. But it all becomes apparent when Mr Barker is brought into the story, which by the way love the character name choice. At first you think he's just a natural remedy hermit that Eric seeks out. But the story soon becomes clearer as we learn more about Katherine's affliction. Then Todd brilliantly brings in the supernatural element but still keeps a level of mystery surrounding the Geek. Which builds the horror of the scene and the extreme nature of the ritual that takes place. The reveal of why this is all happening makes it even better and truly goretastic and brilliantly written. Todd leaves you wanting more with this story. I want to know what becomes of the characters and also how things develop with the Geek. With this particular storyline, he left it on a cliffhanger that made me want more. The detail of the tale, the backstory that builds anticipation and even the care and description put into the Geek himself. I would love a continuation of this story.
The Todd-Father Strikes Again
Another great, short read from the Todd-Father. This reads like a prologue and I'd love to see more of Geek in the future
The Power Of Voodoo
Todd Love has a knack for putting a shit ton of story into just a few pages, and nowhere is this more evident than in Geek. This short story is unsettling from start to finish, it has well defined characters, and it has more plot points than a story this size could realistically have, or so it seems. So, what is this voodo? And how do I tap into it? Like anything else I've read by Love, Geek is a must read, and hopefully we will hear more from Geek in the future. A prequel would be nice. Hint. Hint. Or even a series of prequels. And than a sequel?
