Another triumphant instalment in the vasectomus series. This one was much more emotional than the others and felt like the story came full circle but I am still hopeful for more. There were the usual depraved things happening along the way with a weirdly sweet journey of what turned out to be purpose. The cult side of it is immensely enjoyable and more fleshed out here. The characters were well written and whichever ones you loved or hated they elicited a very strong reaction. I finished it too fast like an idiot and will have to be content with reading the series from the beginning again.

This was a one sitting read for me, driven by curiosity, admiration, and ultimately the engagingly weird story. Tim Eagle's strengh is atmosphere and mood, and in "Scion" he excels in bringing together disparate plotlines with subtlety and attention to detail, to create an ambience of loss and trauma seldom seen in similar examples of weird fiction. "Scion" being part of Tim's Vasectomus Collection, a bundle of stories where birth and unbirth figure centrally, it builds upon moments of surreality, violence, and abuse in the life of a mother and her daughter. We follow them from bizarre ceremonies to the preparation for the fulfillment of messianic promises. Though it's easy for Vasectomus readers to see where "Scion" might fall in the overaching narrative, it's rather hard for one to read as a standalone. That said, anyone who appreciates a mother's love for her daughter, the sacrifices this entails, and the monstrous acts this may lead to, will love this tale!
