Tim Eagle’s short story can be described as a mixture of romance and spiders, in a world that is ultra regulated. “Jacks” are men in suits that patrol the streets and brutally enforce laws, rules, and regulations. Cara and Sloan are just a couple in love, with each other, their pet spiders, and their cigarettes. As more ridiculous restrictions are set, these two groups teeter on the brink of a disastrous encounter. I really enjoyed the author’s imaginative plot, and how relatable Sloan/Cara were with their lives, vices, and thoughts of the future (although, unlike them, I really would never consider a spider as a pet). This story was over too quickly for my liking, but Eagle is definitely an author I’ll be reading again!

Wow!! This is a powerful short story, about Cara and Sloan, who are completely in love with each other. They also share a love of cigarettes. Unfortunately for them, they live in a dystopian future, where ‘Jacks’ (robotic like soldiers), control and ‘shoot to kill’ anyone doing something they shouldn’t. This was a powerfully, intense love story which warms your heart but at the same time, chills you to the bone. I must admit, it tugged at my heartstrings, and I had to “wipe the dust from my eye” a few times This took 30 - 40 minutes to read, but it packs a punch from beginning to end...LOVE THAT ENDING!! I highly recommend this brilliant, unique novella!! An easy 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
United Kingdom1984 With Spiders
Definitely not the beginning you expect. A loving married couple are living their best life but then things seem to take a turn for the worse. The “jacks” are taking away everyone’s fun including cigarettes and if you’re caught the consequences are dire. The couple find an interesting way around the rules, for a while. There is a real 1984 vibe in this short but devastating piece.
