Wererats Underground is Terry Miller’s extreme sequel to his novella Den of the Wererats. And yes, you need to read them in order. But be warned, Terry Miller ups his extreme horror game in this one.
This is a relentless and driving story of sex, violence, depravity, and shapeshifting wererats. Terry Miller pulls no punches in the telling of Raven’s unmerciful pursuit of her dark ambitions, with the exception of his clear effort not to glorify the SA. Yes, there’s SA along with a host of other things some people might consider triggering. This is a brilliant but boundary-crossing Extreme Horror novel and only for those of sturdy intestinal fortitude.
Amidst the brutality, sex, and gore is evocative characterization (meaning you feel things about them, not necessarily like them), suspense (both anticipation of what’s going to happen and concern about what vile and twisted thing might be coming up), intrigue (because wererats and lots of gripping twists), action (sex and violence and feeding, oh my), and fantastic dialogue (some of it so darkly humorous). It’s a solid and compelling story, and the graphic, extreme nature of the telling is disturbingly integral.
Five Stars for an incredibly written, relentless shapeshifter story. This is a fantastic Extreme Horror read and an intense follow-up to the first one, but check your triggers and boundaries at the title page. Extreme Horror fans only, please.
