Loved it!
“The nightmares are outside now, and there’s no room left for them in dreams.” This was an eerie tale of two detectives trying to solve a spree of bizarre and unsettling murders. Things come to a head in a sewer bound chase that reveals a startling truth to the mystery. Despite being a short story, the two main characters were interesting, and the dialogue was engaging. I was enjoying every minute of it, and would love to see a sequel!! ““We were forgotten by you, and left to starve. We will starve no more. We want to feed. We want to consume. You will all be consumed…”
Not what I expected at all!
I was expecting something more grotesque from this book, especially with the first chapter. But what I got was a story of two detectives trying to solve unusual murders. I started off not liking the main characters, towards the end though I felt empathy for them and the horrors they've come across. I would have liked more closure at the end, but sometimes stories just don't have an ending. I think if there had been more closure it would have felt forced.
Disturbing!
The synopsis for this story is as follows: “While investigating a series of peculiar and unsettling deaths in Denver, two deeply flawed detectives learn there might be no salvation for any of us.” This is as simple an explanation as you can get, while being the most horrific one of all. Robinson has an imagination unlike anyone that I have read. This bit of bizarre fiction was an outstanding and truly unsettling read that went places that I could never had imagined. Robinson creates a most disturbing tale that unfolds into a deeply horrifying nightmare of utter hopelessness and acceptance. Some of the images in this story will never leave my head. I highly recommend this story, either in audio or book form. I did listen to this on audio, and it was very well-done. The narrator has an amazing voice and kept the delivery on point. 4.5 stars.
Overall Very Good
Strong opening, but the middle drags on a bit. I enjoyed the ending, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Gross and Gory
You Will Be Consumed is above all else, a gross book. But if that's what you're looking for, books rarely do it better. Nikolas P. Robinson has an amazing eye for the details that make gross things come to life. Anyone could write a stripper's backside opening up and eating a head. It takes a true talent to show readers the toilet paper inside as the head slides in. That there's a good story in there (nice parallels to Larry Cohen's film God Told Me to Kill) is gravy.
