"I approached the door at the end of the corridor. Intrigue, anxiety, and excitement at an all-time high. With a shaky hand, I removed the key chain from my pocket and began to try keys. On the head of one of the keys was a triangle made up of ten solid circles – billiard balls! I slid it into the lock – it fit like a glove. Slowly I turned the key, it was stiff after so many decades of disuse, but finally, with the shrieking cry of ancient banshee awakening after a long slumber, the lock clunked open.
I scanned the gloomy room, the low early afternoon sun unable to penetrate the grimy windows. I found a light switch on the wall and clicked it up and down, hoping for some illumination, but knowing it was a fruitless endeavour.
Then I froze.
I could feel a presence behind me. Close. So close that, had it been possible, I’d have felt the breath of my invisible spectator on the nape of my neck. Slowly, I began to turn.
I let out a yelp of fear, as, with every centimetre of my rotation, he became increasingly vivid, until I was face to face with the former owner of this grand estate."
