I spent a big chunk of my late 20s-mid 30s copyediting for Necro Publications, so I was fed on a steady diet of the worst masters of the hardcore horror genre like Ed Lee and Charlee Jacob could dole out. I grew pretty desensitized to the genre a long time ago, and so haven’t read much of it in over a decade. But recently, thanks to my desire to make my way through the entire run of the Written in Red podcast, and the hosts’ constant mention of something called Godless.com, I’ve developed a renewed interest in my old stomping grounds. Or at least the desire to do a quick drive by and check out the old neighborhood. But when I got to Godless and saw the massive number of titles available there, I did the only thing I could think to do and I sorted them by date, which I assumed meant the order in which they were published to the site. First on that list was Kevin Sweeney’s THE GREEDY AND THE ENVIOUS: EXTREME HORROR (THE SEVIIN SICK SINS BOOKS 4 & 5). It was only $0.99 so I assumed that meant it was relatively short, so I bought it and, over the last two days on my breaks at work, I read it. I’ve never heard of Kevin Sweeney but he’s definitely made an impression. Keep in mind, I’ve read titles like DREAD IN THE BEAST, HEADER, THE BIGHEAD, and THE PIG, all while at lunch at this job or another, and the times I’ve found myself having to stop reading until I’d swallowed by food have been few and far between. But Sweeney has managed to add himself to the very small list of authors who have grossed me out. THE GREEDY AND THE ENVIOUS, without giving away anything of this 43-page story, is about twins Castor and Pollux, two spoiled rich boys who’ve never been told NO a day in their lives. They’ve been chosen to take part in an online game called the SeVIIn Sick Sins, and what they have to do in order to win—their lives being the prize—was downright brutal, graphic, and the stuff that makes hardcore horror legends. This stuff is definitely NOT for everyone, but if you know, you know, and if you dig the more graphic Ed Lee stuff Necro was putting out back in the day, you’ll dig what Sweeney’s doing here. There are other SeVIIn Sick Sins books—this one is subtitled books 4 and 5—but for whatever reason the Godless website had THIS one as the first published to their site. Maybe you need to read books 1-3 to help you understand the world? I don’t think so; I got enough of the backstory on the Disciple of Iscariot and what goes on here to understand this book, at least, and it definitely made me want to read more. I ran into about a half dozen typos, too many for such a short piece, but they weren’t so egregious that it made me want to stop reading and never look at another Kevin Sweeney book. If anything, it made me miss my days as Dave Barnett’s copy editor. Sweeney’s characters were well-defined, his plot easy to follow, and his gore was on point. Maybe it’s a side effect of getting older, like how I can no longer enjoy carnival rides like I used to, or maybe Sweeney’s just that good, but I found a few passages here that I would definitely NOT recommend you read with a mouthful of grilled chicken or rice. And THAT is what I look for in my hardcore horror. Excellent effort, I just wish there hadn’t been so many typos. But I’ll definitely check out more from this author.

Fantastically obscene, vicious and warped. This book puts the extreme in extreme horror.
And he called it "Schadenfreude as a spectator sport," which is genius if you ask me.
Parts IV & V are fucking grim.
Twisted Tormented Twins
At first I felt a little bummed that two of the sins were combined, but Kevin executes this story with finesse. It all makes perfect sense why they are combined in the end, and really it may be odd if it had been different.The story follows twins Castor and Pollux. Of course, they are destined to be The Disciple’s latest victims. They too have exploited the dark web with their videos clearly exposing their sins. After being abducted they find themselves cellotaped together back to back in a void room except for cameras and speakers. Although there are only two of them they must be the one most full of three things by the end of the time The Disciple allows. This story again was written a bit differently, and close to The Sloth in style. However, it seemed to work very well for this entry. Although, I’ll say it again that I really love the writing style of The Lusty the best. It made me feel so much more immersed in the story. Nevertheless, this, and all, are must reads for any extreme horror lover! I give The Greedy and The Envious four and a half turds out of five decayed teeth. This entry may be a tie with The Sloth as my second favorite. I only deducted half a point because of the ending. It simply left me wanting more. Like someone who hasn’t gotten enough to satiate their appetite. I also took into account the writing style again. Nevertheless, this series is an absolute must read! I just could not stop, and actually asked when is the next entry?! I’m dying here!
