Thrash Track (Detective Mahoney Series Book 5) by Julie Hiner

Julie Hiner

It's 1999. Electric avenue is sizzling. Thrash metal is thriving.

The body of a young man is found behind a strip club. His skinless hand is clutching an open book. A message is written in his own blood. Detective Stella Mahoney, yanked from a heavy metal and bourbon bender, is thrust into a hunt for the Skin Peeler. Her inherited Mahoney instincts heighten.

Lolita eases the grip of her damaged brain by immersing herself in MTV videos. The contortion of her lip distorts her rhymes. Her mind flickers back to 1993 when she was the guitarist of Electric Skin and in love with the lead singer. She’s obsessed with achieving the perfect rap-metal performance.

When their worlds collide, sex, murder, thrash metal and rap fuse into a deadly combination.

A Thrashingly good time

I never know how to start these reviews and not say things that are cliche but this dragged me in by the face and wouldn’t let go. The two perspectives from the two different characters the author uses takes nothing away from the mystery and the solving of the crime but almost intensifies it. As always the technical and procedural detail is perfect and has obviously been well researched. I sped through this book as I have all the previous ones in this series. I think this might have been one of the gorier instalments and it was done subtly but will not leave my mind anytime soon. The way the author describes the thrill and the feel of the live music makes me feel like I’m there even without the fancy little additions you get with this package. You can feel the love for heavy metal all the way through the story and we also get a little grunge added in this time. Can’t wait for the next one.
