My first intro to Kris's work and it won't be my last. The depth of detail he goes into with this story is impressive as hell. I mean, he knows his musical instruments, a full understanding of the genre of music and you can almost hear the characters play. The descriptions when they play are that detailed, as he goes over the rhythm whilst also making the reader believe in the music. Vida is an interesting character as she seems to hold a lot of animosity towards Jason. This later is explained but still she is one twisted sister. Even though he is basically a perfect fit for the band and the other members can see this. You definitely get the feeling that there is more to the band than they let on with how the audition progresses. After a quick band meeting things go south really quickly, Instantly Rufty ups the ante and gives the reader a great bit of backstory. In a way it's actually kind of comical how the band got themselves into this mess, but all the time you're reading you are rooting for Jason. Honestly, for a short story, it showcases his understanding, his ability to captivate the reader, and his creativity as a writer.
