The Buried King by Thomas KS Wake (Emerge #5)
Deep in the Canadian wilderness, a high-end resort is nearing its completion.
An ancient entity trapped in the soil. Waiting. Hungering. Hating.
A village elder blinded by grief sets out to unleash the ageless power upon those who crossed him, his people, and his family.
When our modern world comes face to face with the power of the old, we realize we are not the kings of this world. We never were.

Emerging In Multiple Ways
Thomas KS Wake deftly combines cosmic horror, folk horror, and kaiju with environmental consciousness in a captivating tale with The Buried King. Raymond, an unscrupulous building developer visits the site of an out-of-the-way vacation resort that should have never existed, at least not where it's been erected. Unfortunately, his arrival coincides with the consequences of his predatory and deceptive business practices coming to fruition, and it's a price we all have to pay. Beneath the construction, buried for centuries, a malevolent force of nature awakens. As those tasked with containing the monster give up hope and give in to righteous anger, the results will be catastrophic and undeniable. Nature will take its revenge. Reaching the final page of this story inevitably causes the reader to immediately hope that Wake is working on a follow-up to this title. The disaster porn addict within us wants nothing more than to see just how far the devastation will go and how long humanity will manage to survive.
Bloody chaos!
This is the latest in the Emerge series from Godless and D&T Publishing LLC and another name I'll be keeping an eye out for in future! This was a quick, brutal folk tale, about an old 'king' released back into the modern world as an act of revenge, only for it to backfire and bloody, evil chaos to ensue! Thomas managed to pack so much into this short story, brilliant imagery, fear, tension, drama and brutality, and it held my attention the whole way! Well paced and well written, a fantastic read! More please!!
The Buried King Hungers For Revenge
“The last thing I remember is the mob that descended upon Us, the sudden draining of strength from my body, the silencing of my voice.” It sleeps. It awakens. It hears the music of the Iñupiat. It hungers for freedom, the taste of flesh and marrow. It patiently waits for its revenge. The sacred grounds have been desecrated by an unscrupulous businessman. One who does not care that he has intruded into the lands of the Iñupiat. His only desire is to see his vision of a new resort built deep in the Canadian wilderness and the money that the resort will make. The Iñupiat will no longer stand for the ways of these men and they call forth an ancient evil to exact their revenge. I love folk horror and ancient entities. There is so much darkness and evil attached to ancient beasts and the fear can be felt as it arises from the deep. The revenge is brutal and there is no escaping the creature of old. It amazes me how so much detail and character development can be written into a short story. Very well written and entertaining, indeed! The Emerge Series of short tales of horror being put out by D&T and Godless every month are ones I look forward to reading, discovering new and upcoming authors, and looking forward to future releases!
Fear What Lurks Below!
Many generations ago the Iñupiat people locked away a monstrous being that towards over the land and preyed upon humans, sealing this gargantuan beast deep underground where it could never devour another man ever again. Fast forward to our current time, and the Iñupiat have been swindled out of their sacred grounds by businessman looking to create the next biggest resort deep in the Canadian woods. Unknown to these men, their disrespect for the land and it’s people will spell out their untimely demise at the hands of something you or I could ever fathom. The Buried King is folk horror done right. Well researched, a topic I have never seen used before in horror, fleshed out characters, and fantastic pacing. Not to mention Thomas KS Wake figured out how to fit so much into such a tiny package! Usually something that felt this huge would take hundreds of pages to convey well, but Wake used his writing magic to fit it all into a short story that should take less than an hour to read from cover to cover. D&T’s Emerge program has introduced me to yet another rising star I’ll be keeping my eye on. If you haven’t been keeping up with the Emerge series on godless, now would be the time! Every month a brand spanking new author is published for their very first time. Check out these budding writers, you may end up finding the next big indie sensation!
Ancient evil awakens
This is an excellent example of folk horror with an added bonus of revenge. The author did a wonderful job of bringing the smells and sights of the forest alive in your mind. The Buried King is a terrifying ancient evil and will eat you alive. I particularly enjoyed the description of what happens when it eats you alive.
