UNBORTION by Rowland Bercy Jr.
It was alive, confused, and pissed! It could not understand why it was violently separated from its host and left to rot. Following an undeniable call to pursue the one who abandoned it and seek revenge the quest for retribution had begun, and nothing or no one would stand in the way.
I’m surprised by how touching this story was, it was like a messed up Homeward Bound. Don’t let the cover art or the story concept out you off, this book is really a story about making mistakes and forgiving those who wrong you. I got into thinking it would be a bit hard to read with my 10 month old sleeping next to me while I read, but finishing it brought a smile to my face and made me glad to have such a strong connection to my son.
You will be saying WTF??? a lot during this book. I have never read anything quite like it.
I first learned of Unbortion through the Written in Red podcast that Rowland is a co-host on. I was immediately compelled to reach out to Rowland and purchase a copy of this and his follow-up, Payback is a Witch. I loved this book, it is wonderfully grotesque and entertaining. It reminded me some of the sleazy horror of the 1980's. I was also able to check out the audiobook and somehow, that came across as more graphic. This was a great break-out book, and I look forward to checking out his other works as they come out!
I raced through this short novel by Rowland Bercy Jr, I started to read it on my bus journey home and couldn't stop reading it. I walked home with my eyes glued to my iPhone screen, grabbed my dog and went to the park without stopping for a moment. I was left dumbfounded, and not sure what I thought, to be honest. I felt sorry for the fetus and was mentally cheering it on in its macabre journey to find its host. I'm still a bit stunned and wondering what the fuck I read. Five solid stars from me.
There is something about the cover of Unbortion that is truly unsettling, and when the moment in question finally comes, it is with much trepidation. Unbortion is well written, unique, and bizarre, with a super duper twist at the end. I look forward to seeing what this author does next.
