Gary Butler is about to become the first sixth grader in Fairmount to ever jump the Devil’s Well; a forty-foot cliff dive into the icy black water below. This Rite of Passage is not for the feint of heart, but if Gary pulls it off, he will no doubt become a living legend at his school and in the eyes of Sarah Meyers. Gary Butler isn’t the first boy to make a foolish decision to impress a girl. And although he won’t be the last, he just might end up a legend after all.

I recommend this author again and again.

I really enjoyed this story. I mean, who hasn’t done something stupid for love, but you usually live to regret it, right? And there’s the rub. Thank you, Mr. Manx, for another exciting read. I recommend this author again and again. It was my pleasure to receive a free copy of this book, but that does not affect my opinions in this review of this entertaining story.

Tense and emotional

This is a dark tale of peer pressure, with a tense atmosphere, and a horrifying yet sad ending! The descriptions were so vivid, I went through every moment and emotion with Gary!

Terror Within

The Devil's Well. I have known a similar place. One where the water flows strong and the bottom is only deep in a certain spot. The jump is dangerous, one I did not take, but many have and one did meet their demise. This story brought this memory to mind. The wanting to fit in and not be deemed a chicken, pansy, or other colorful words. Wanting to impress the gang, the boys or the girls and become a hero of sorts. In this story, young Gary is the youngest being challenged to jump. He is being pressured and bullied. He hesitates for a long period of time, but in the end, when no one is watching, he takes the plunge. The terror hits hard in this one in more ways than one! Read it and find out what happens!

A powerful story

The Devil's Well is ultimately a powerful story. It speaks heavily to the inner turmoil of peer pressure and how it can bully a person into disregarding the self. It's also a horror story full of terror. Hard to review this one without spoilers, but I loved it. Daemon Manx is a fantastic wordsmith. He draws you effortlessly into his stories, and once you are there, you discover nothing is quite what it seems. Highly recommended reading!

The Devil's Well

On the surface it, you think it's a coming of age story that goes way south, but it's more than that. There are layers within this tale of youngsters doing youngster thing. And then, of course, the terror begins. Definitely one to check out.
